K-12 vs. College: What’s the Difference?

Each fall semester, I teach classes with a lot of students who are experiencing college for the very first time: they are first-semester freshmen. And they tend to struggle — quietly, but in predictable ways.

Many – maybe even most – of these students have been told in high school that college classes will be much harder and worst, that their professors will not care about them and will not want to help them. And so they suffer in silence.

This semester, for the first time, I was able to create a powerpoint presentation to explain to my students why and how college is different from their high school experience. I shared on social media, and an awful lot of people asked me to share publicly.

So here is. In keeping with all of the posts in this blog, I’m trying to draw back the curtain on the hidden curriculum: things that college students are supposed to understand, but few take the time to teach.

In the future, I’ll add voice to this – but right now I have a cold, and that’s something that does not need to be shared 🙂
